Northview Bank Lends in St. Louis County
St. Louis County is the largest county in Minnesota, and the second-largest east of the Mississippi. Located in the heart of the Iron Range, this area of the state is home to the hearty denizens of Hibbing, Virginia, Duluth, and Eveleth (home of the US Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the World’s Largest Hockey Stick).
Renowned for its spectacular natural beauty, St. Louis County boasts Voyageurs National Park, including the south shore of the massive and ruggedly beautiful Rainy Lake; the million-plus acre Superior National Forest; and the incredible, pristine wonder that is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Wilderness (BWCAW). Over a million acres, the BWCAW features thousands of lakes and streams, hiking trails, and over 1,200 miles of canoe routes. Only a limited number of permits are allowed to enter each day, so each trip is truly like stepping back in time.
Cyclists and walkers can check out the Mesabi Trail, which runs 132 miles through 28 communities.
As far as lakeshore, St. Louis County has perhaps the most spectacular collection of pristine waters to be found anywhere. Lake Superior is measured in square miles, not acres—at 31,700 square miles it is the second-largest lake in the world. It plunges to 1,332 feet deep and offers trophy-sized salmon, lake trout, walleye, and pike.
The 8,000 acre Island Lake Reservoir is 10 miles north of Duluth and is actively managed for muskies and walleyes. Lake Vermillion is another amazing St. Louis County lake. At a whopping 40,000 acres, it offers an amazing array of fishing opportunities for all the major gamefish. Trout Lake (one of the many in Minnesota) is big at 7,500 acres and offers exceptional water clarity at 16 feet. It is in the BWCAW so fishing pressure is light and paddlers can look expect a pristine wilderness experience.
